The Volvo C40 Recharge plays off the 5-passenger XC40 but has even more stylish cues. It has the raised ride position and all-wheel drive of the XC40 Recharge electric SUV, but more design-oriented styling. This is most prominent in the rear, where the roof is tapered in a coupe-like profile.
Volvo C40 range
The C40 is powered by a 78 kWh battery. Range is still to be determined. Volvo anticipates that it will be 420 kilometers, which converts to 260 miles. However, the way European is tabulated differs from U.S. standards. Trade publication Automotive News says the C40 Recharge will deliver an estimated 210 miles of range.
Regardless, Volvo did say that range can improve over time thanks to software updates.
The new Volvo C40 Recharge is slated to begin production this fall. Pricing and exact availability is still to be announced. Also interesting, Volvo said its electric cars will be sold online only.
Volvo’s electric future
“The C40 Recharge represents the future of Volvo and shows where we are going,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer. “It is fully electric, offered online only with a convenient care package and will be available for quick delivery. Getting a new Volvo was never this attractive.”
The Volvo C40 Recharge is part of a wider electrification effort by Volvo. It plans to sell its last plug-in hybrid vehicle by 2029 and be electric-only by 2030.
